If you are wanting to get a small pet and would like to have something different than other people have, a hedgehog may just be the end of your search. In whole, there are 14 species of hedgehogs in the world. They are spread throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Any hedgehogs living in the United States were imported or bred from imported hedgehogs for the purpose of being pets.

In their native environment, hedgehogs have a lifespan of 3 to 7 years. They hibernate during the winter months and are nocturnal, coming out at night to hunt for insects. They eat, mostly, insects, but are known to survive on small birds and eggs, as well.

Unlike the sharp quills of a porcupine, a hedgehog’s quills are stiff but not sharp. Their coat of quills is comparable to a bristly brush. Underneath their bodies their fur is soft. Before you bring one home for a pet you should consider that they are nocturnal and will be most active in the evening or at night. If you find a hedgehog that is young and in good health, you can bond with it and it can become an affectionate pet. Some hedgehogs are nervous and anxious, though, and may not enjoy being cuddled with.

Wire hedgehog cages work wonderfully for their home as long as the holes aren’t wide enough for them to squeeze through. They can squeeze through anything that they can get their head into. In the pet cage place a water bottle, food dish, and an exercise wheel. The exercise wheel is important due to the importance of exercise to a hedgehog’s health. Other things that can be tubes, boxes, or bowls for them to hide in. They, also, like to dig so making a small sandbox for your pet can be a fun idea.

Try to get your pet hedgehog out of his or her cage on a daily basis. If a hedgehog doesn’t interact with you regularly you will end up with a defensive and unruly pet. Just make sure you supervise your hedgie during playtime.
